/ Our Policies
In the recent local elections, at which Labour won 30 out of 30 Council seats in Mitcham and Morden, we offered a clear vision for the future.
1. MAKING MERTON AFFORDABLE
Money is tight so we will freeze your council tax once again for the next 4 years, meaning your council tax in 2019 will be exactly the same as it was in 2010. Thanks to our policies Merton is now cheaper than the neighbouring boroughs of Sutton, Croydon and Kingston.
2. KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN
Respecting this community means sweeping your road each week and giving all residents access to a new 24-hour call-out service between sweeps for dirty areas. We will also clean High Streets 7 days-a-week and protect the FREE bulky waste collection service from your home. We will collect your rubbish each week and fight off the pressure to move to fortnightly or monthly collections.
3. PROVIDING THE BEST FOR OUR CHILDREN
Education improves the life chances of our children. That’s why we will create 2,000 new primary school places so that every parent is guaranteed a local place for their child. We will also keep improving exam results – Merton schools now achieve well above the national average and we want them to become even better.
4. FOCUSING ON THE THINGS THAT MATTER
We will concentrate on the things that make this a great community like keeping the parks and libraries open. We will also fight to keep all local hospitals, such as St Helier, open and we will oppose plans by the Tory Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to cut bobbies on the beat.
5. HERE FOR YOU
Being good representatives means staying in touch and always listening. That’s why we will continue to hold regular coffee mornings, advice sessions and deliver regular newsletters. We will also give you our phone numbers and email addresses so you can always get in touch.
