Banking hub secured for Mitcham town centre

Mitcham

We are delighted to share the fantastic news that Mitcham will be getting its own Banking Hub!

When Lloyds Bank closes in January, our town was set to be left without a single bank. That would have affected every resident in Mitcham – removing access to in-person banking and forcing people to travel to Tooting for basic services.

But Mitcham did not give up.

Over recent months, local people have joined our team in timing bus journeys, sharing their experiences, attending meetings, and making our case loud and clear.

As a result of this campaign, LINK has confirmed the Banking Hub – the first in South West London, and only the fifth in London. This is a major win for Mitcham – and one secured by our community.

John Howells, CEO of LINK, said:

“We’re very pleased to recommend a banking hub in Mitcham. While our initial assessment took the view that there wasn’t a need for a hub because of existing cash access points across the town, the community made a strong case highlighting specific local issues which we have agreed meet the criteria for a banking hub. Listening to local communities is a key part of a process, and I know that when Mitcham’s hub opens it will be a vital resource for the local community and high street.”

What the Banking Hub will provide:

  • Cash withdrawals and deposits five days a week

  • Help to manage your money with whoever you bank with, every weekday

  • Face-to-face support from major banks on different days

  • A secure, staffed space for those who prefer in-person banking

What happens next?

The Hub will now be delivered by Cash Access UK. Over the coming weeks, they will begin engaging with the community and start the search for a suitable site in Mitcham.

We will be working closely with them to ensure the Hub is delivered without delay.

Thank you

This win belongs to you.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this campaign, and to our fantastic local councillors who worked alongside us throughout.

We did it, Mitcham. We stood up for our town – and we won.
